This controversial 1973 Chardonnay from the Calistoga region of Napa Valley in California became an instant media darling after beating out Grand Cru Burgundy Chardonnays in the legendary Judgement of Paris in 1976. This wine, made from young vines, fooled many with its fully developed, refined and rich fruit flavours, fuller body, balanced acidity and hints of meatiness. What was thought only old vine Grand Cru vineyards could produce, was now seen as possible in younger regions and permanently put California on the map.
