Myanmar (Burma) is an ethnically diverse nation with Government recognized 135 distinct ethnic groups. These are grouped primarily according to region. There are eight major ethnic races, namely, Kachin, Kayah, Karen (Kayin), Chin, Bamar, Mon, Rankine and Shan. The largest ethnic group, Bamar, takes part nearly 70% of the population, while Shan being the second largest.
