Tengu are powerful spirits from Japanese folklore. Ascetic and monk-like, the Tengu live in solitude atop remote mountains and spend their lives meditating. However, the Tengu are not pacifists. When provoked, they can display a fearsome rage and savagery that can result in great calamities. Brave men often go into the mountains in search of the Tengu for their wisdom. And occasionally, the Tengu impart their knowledge and share their secrets with the worthiest of these mortals. Minamoto no Yoshitsune - one of Japan’s most legendary warriors - is said to have learned swordsmanship from the king of all Tengu.
