Alaric is leader of the Visigoths (reigned AD 394-410) who famously sacked the city of Rome in AD 410. Very little is known about his family. As a young man he received much of his military training in the Roman army, fighting alongside Roman troops as leader of Gothic forces under Theodosius I until the Emperor's death in 395. Alaric rebelled against the new regime, laying waste to Greece and entering Italy. After sacking Rome, his Visigoths began three days of murdering and plundering, continuing their destruction further south in Italy. Alaric died before reaching Sicily.
