Bukovinian Bears

This illustration is about a strange holiday in Ukraine - the old New year (or Malanka). There are a lot of ancient traditions dedicated to this day. For example, young guys dress up into "bears" - costumes made of dry grass. They usually spend the whole night of January 13-14 going from one house to another with songs, dances, and pretended theatrical fights.
