Peng Shuai is a Chinese tennis champion, ranked world No. 1 doubles player by the WTA in 2014. On November 2, 2021, Peng posted on Weibo accusing Zhang Gaoli, a retired Vice Premier of China, of sexually assaulting her three years earlier. Her post was censored 20 mins later, along with her name and even the Chinese word for tennis. She then disappeared from public view for two weeks. The incident elicited international concern over her safety, the hashtag #WhereIsPengShuai went viral outside of China, and received support from tennis stars such as Naomi Osaka, and Serena Williams.
