Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici (27 September 1389 – 1 August 1464), Italian banker and politician, establisher of the Medici family as rulers of Florence during the Italian Renaissance.
Besides being a banker, he was also a distinguished patron of arts, learning and architecture, a cultured man who highly appreciated Florentine Renaissance art and architecture and was able to sponsor artistic projects due to his economical and political power.
His notable artistic associates were Donatello and Fra Angelico.
In architecture, the Medici are responsible for some notable features, like Uffizi Gallery, the Boboli Gardens, the Belvedere, the Medici Chapel, and the Palazzo Medici.
