Chapter 2: Landfall 

As we descended the ice crystals in the clouds peppered the drop ship, and all six of us held our breath. But then there it was, a new world and in it a city of golden domes on the edge of a vast lake, and there in that city were the reapers, standing stock-still, blue eyes turned up towards the sky, but they weren’t watching us. Because next a shockwave rattled the ship, and falling flames came as pieces of metal began to pirouette past us. Then our mothership came down, cut cleanly in two, trailing our supplies like air bubbles from a drowning man. One part hit the water in a nose dive, the other aquaplaned along before burying itself in the flooded city. We crash landed on the water after a piece of metal shark finned into our roof, and somehow, we floated. We found the head of a statue bobbing next to us, some ancient god that our ship had seen fit to dethrone. And then we saw them, three black and gold giant sized statues of men, up there upon the hill.
