The Southeastern region of Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) is plagued with some of the most prominent features of the Moon. Fenced in on the East (East is up in this image) by the massive Montes Apenninus, following this mountain range to the South we find Erathostenes crater, 58 km in diameter and 3.6 km deep, with a terraced inner wall and central peak.
The Northern part of the Apennines was the chosen site for the Apollo 15 landing, which explored the Rima Hadley region along the mountain range.
Further North (left of center on the image) the Archimedes Montes and Archimedes Crater stand out against the relatively flat and smooth surface of Mare Imbrium, where the first spacecraft to ever ...
