She immigrated to the States from Bulgaria at 13 years old and cleaned banks to make ends meet. She fell in love when she was 17 to a Bulgarian boy and a few months later became pregnant. They got married, but she quickly realized that her son's future was in danger. Her husband had become an alcoholic who would rarely come home, never help with the baby, and would even sometimes be abusive towards her.
