The origin of Yokohama Chinatown (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture) is the opening of Yokohama Port in 1859. Chinese people, mainly in Guangdong, who can understand Chinese characters, played an active role as an intermediary for Westerners who landed with the opening of the port. Eventually, an overseas Chinese settlement, which was indispensable to Japan and foreign settlements, was created in Yokohama Nitta, which is close to the foreign settlement, and later developed into Chinatown.
