Gomphotherium (‘wedge beast’) was an elephant relative that resided in Eurasia, Africa and North America. It was a little smaller than extant elephants, at 2.5-3m (8.2-9.8 ft) in height and 5m (16.4 ft) in length.
Its most characteristic feature was its long lower jaw ending in two smaller tusks, giving it a total of four tusks. These lesser, extra tusks may have been used as digging tools. Its trunk was smaller than that of its other relatives, including modern elephants.
