Named for the Aztec feathered snake god, Quetzalcoatlus is one of the largest known flying animals to have existed, larger than some light aircraft and with a wingspan of 10-11m (36-39 ft). Its type species, Q. northropi, is even named for an aircraft designer. Large, toothless pterosaurs like Quetzalcoatlus, called azhdarchids, were able to fly because of their hollow skeleton granting light body weight. While its hind legs were thin, they were quite powerful, allowing it to launch itself as high as 2.4m (8 ft) to commence flight.
