Megalodon ('big tooth') was one of the largest sharks to have lived, thought to have ranged anywhere from 14-20m (46-67 ft). Like extant sharks, most of its body was made of cartilage, so very few fossils have been found aside from teeth.
While it was previously thought to be a relative of the great white shark, it is now known to be a separate family that separated from great white sharks during the Cretaceous Period. It is thought to have hunted large prey, such as whales, and became extinct after baleen whales migrated away from Megalodon's range to the poles.
