Dunkleosteus was a placoderm (armored fish), one of the largest to have lived. The largest species ranged up to 8.8m (29 ft) long. Mostly only fossils of its head have been found, meaning the rest of the animal’s body is generally unknown. These fossils show it had a skull comprised of armored plates which extended to its ‘teeth’.
While older reconstructions depict it with these plates upon its head, they were likely hidden under the skin. More recent discoveries have determined that it had a similar tail and fins to modern sharks.
