A Confederate flag in Orangeburg, South Carolina was dedicated in 2001 and stands beneath a sign for Edisto River Creamery and Kitchen. The monument was sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans who received a small piece of land from the building’s previous owner. Edisto River Creamery’s owner Tommy Daras has fought with the Sons of Confederate Veterans for the removal of the flag, but the city of Orangeburg ruled that the flag was protected as a form of free speech.
