Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948 AD) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist, who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He became one of the most respected spiritual and political leaders of the 1900's and is honored by Indians as the father of the Indian Nation.
