**M8 lagoon Nebula**
One of my favorite objects in the Milky Way!
Shot from Christchurch, New Zealand.
Located in the Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way, M8 is 4,100 light-years from Earth. Ultraviolet light from hot, newborn stars causes hydrogen to fluoresce bright pink in photographs. To the eye the nebulosity looks misty gray. The Lagoon is named for the dark lane that winds to the east of the brightest patch. Other dark globules — stellar birth cocoons — are silhouetted against bright nebulosity.
