"Dotted Rafters" is inspired by traditional transferring methods to accurately place patterns on pieces.
Artisans will use a design technique, called Chonaegi (초내기), that involves creating or copying the desired Dancheong patterns onto paper. With a method called Jeoncho (전초), holes are poked into the paper along the drawn lines, then laid over the new piece. Chalk powder is then rubbed over the paper to transfer the pattern, this is called Tabun (타분). When the paper is removed, all that is left behind is a series of dots. The artists can then use these dots as a guide when painting the design on new pieces.
