The tragedy of the Mariupol Drama Theater will leave anyone speechless. Its location is terrifying and holy, so any building in its place would be blasphemy. However, the site should not vanish or blend in with an urban environment. A mound should form there, just like the one that was there a thousand years ago.
The artwork by Mykhailo Skop sends us to the painting by David Burliuk, who was proud of his Cossack origin. A high hill, one that’s visible from airplanes. And the neoclassical facade, a symbol of the tragedy, will peek out in front of the embankment and lead to nowhere.
