“The great Martina. I think this was part of a portfolio of the world’s greatest athletes for Sports Illustrated. We went to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which was all indoors and lacked any interesting qualities other than a red court and the fact that we could use the stadium spotlights. I had used these lights before, and they are wonderful for creating another dimension with the shadows. I used this approach on commercial jobs and started applying it to my editorial shoots for Sports Illustrated when I had a great athlete. It was a nice way to illustrate the sport more abstractly. I chose to create this dramatic light and shadow to make a seemingly dull situation look special.”...
