Mario Klingemann’s “Vague Recollection” explores the nature of memory, time, and their interplay with AI. In this work, we see a face form in the monochrome stillness, a fleeting memory of a human as rendered by a neural network, unable to commit the exact features and distinguishing particularities. The work is based on a neural network embedded in the browser, which attempts to remember an encounter in time. As the time vector approaches the point where the recollection is the strongest for a brief moment we can observe the memory fragments forming a face only to disperse again as the vector continues its trajectory in latent space.
