The Movement of the Group Cutting off the strips on all sides of the painting brutally changed the composition. It was never intended that The Captain and the Lieutenant were to be standing in the middle – balancing a toe on the frame. In the original composition Rembrandt managed to catch the movement of a military group gathering together; a novelty that was never seen before in its time. This piece is part of the group where the cut-off is best defined.
