The Lieutenant’s Left Shoulder Showing the weapon practices was of great importance to the Arquebusiers, the client who commissioned Rembrandt to paint The Night Watch. To fully show the cleaning of the gun by blowing on the mechanism, the lieutenant’s shoulder had to be lowered. Rembrandt removed a bit of the shoulder to put more emphasis on the weapon’s beautifully crafted ironwork.
