Eclipses remind us that everything is always in motion, out in the Universe as well as here on Earth. Nothing is ever standing still, even when it seems like it is. Photography enables us to capture a tiny piece of the cosmic dance, to notice it, and appreciate it.
This photograph was taken at 11:14 am from the UK, showing the Sun approximately 66 minutes into the eclipse.
The narrowband hydrogen-alpha filter used to take this image enables us to peer into the chromosphere, the lower region of the solar atmosphere. At this wavelength we can see many of the Sun's most interesting phenomena, including sunspots, prominences and filaments.
