Siobhan was born the third child of eight to a poor family in the slums of Dublin. When she was five, her mother died of pneumonia and her father turned to drink. Siobhan and her siblings were often left to fend for themselves. To pass the time, Siobhan would sing and make up stories. She was particularly skilled at weaving complex tales with poetic lyrics. When she was thirteen, she ran away from home and joined a group of travelling musicians. They recognised her talent and took her under their wing, teaching her how to play the lute and other instruments.
