The sea retreats, dragging seaweed and pebbles to mark the territory it once covered. The line of marine detritus zigzags off into the distance.
I made this painting from memory immediately after walking on the beach on the Isle of Wight, UK. On my walk, I had absorbed the sensations of the late afternoon: the hard wet sand, the slippery seaweed, the sound of the retreating waves, the breeze cooling the summer air. I painted swiftly in Japanese ink on a large sheet of kozo paper. It is from a series of works informed by the Japanese tradition of sumi-e (see the collection description for more information).
