A storm subsides off the coast of England. Rough water crashes onto the rocks of the shoreline, while a distant ship navigates the calming waves as light breaks through.
After observing the storm, I painted swiftly from memory in Japanese ink on a large sheet of kozo paper weighted down with pebbles from the beach. It is from a series of paintings made on the Isle of Wight, UK, informed by the Japanese tradition of sumi-e (see the collection description for more information).
