The Antarctic Treaty was signed into effect December 1, 1959 to become the only continent with no territorial sovereignty. This was to ensure that all who came, came with peaceful purposes only, so no nuclear waste or production to be established here. This agreement also promotes international scientific cooperation in Antarctica and helps preserve the fragile balance of life. Unlike King or Emperor penguins, Gentoo penguins will hatch two chicks at a time.
