Ancestree by Shay The Surrealist #3/10

Ancestree is a piece I created to honor our black ancestors. As a symbol of their strength, perseverance, their wounds and their roots, I created Ancestree, a tree of hands. Like a tree, our ancestors stood tall and strong. Even when they were broken down, they rose from the seeds they planted; their roots run deep, solid in the land. Although the hands look worn out and rough, they still reach out, grasping, fighting for a chance to be free. A single butterfly perches on the tip of the finger, symbolizing hope, change, and freedom.
