Women who dress like me are often misunderstood by people outside and within their communities. On the one hand, it is assumed that we are oppressed or brainwashed for covering ourselves. At the other end of the spectrum we are unfairly deemed to be morally superior compared to Muslim women who do not cover their heads. Such is the level of negativity surrounding the hijab, generated not only by mainstream western media, but also due to extremists who have distorted the meaning of modest dressing and conduct to that of seclusion, deprivation and subordination.
