Growing up in a West Indian household molded me to see the world in a different light. Understanding the struggles my parents endured before immigrating to America in 1983 has led me to appreciate life's blessings and the importance of being true to myself regardless of circumstance. I've long embraced my heritage through the food, music, and energy but had yet to embrace it first hand. "What?! You've never been to Jamaica?!", one used to say, but in 2017 I visited my Motherland for the first time.
