Chapter 2: Landfall As we descended the ice crystals in the clouds peppered the drop ship, and all six of us held our breath. But then there it was, a new world and in it a city of golden domes on the edge of a vast lake, and there in that city were the reapers, standing stock-still, blue eyes turned up towards the sky, but they weren’t watching us. Because next a shockwave rattled the ship, and falling flames came as pieces of metal began to pirouette past us. Then our mothership came down, cut cleanly in two, trailing our supplies like air bubbles from a drowning man.
